#OwnVoices, authenticity, sensitivity, and diverse representation are critical topics in literary and publishing circles. Every writer must be mindful of the type of language they use to tell their stories. In a series of interactive workshops, Yasmin Angoe, best-selling, award-nominated author and professional developmental editor and sensitivity reader with Tessera Editorial, will explore best practices that ensure a conscious mindfulness when writing outside of a writer’s lived experiences to avoid common (and not so common) mistakes, such as two-dimensional characters or stereotypical representations. We'll practice how to ensure, mindfully and sensitively, authentic characters and experiences, and authentic, thoughtfully worded representations. Participants will also get a clearer understanding of what sensitive/authenticity writing is, what it entails, and why our language matters to both reader and writer.
