Description

Amy Bloom said, “The short story is the depth of a novel, the breadth of a poem, and, as you come to the last few paragraphs, the experience of surprise.” In this class, we’ll explore the boundless possibilities presented by the short and flash (short-short) form: emotional realism, lyricism, imaginative worlds, humor, and ambiguity. Every week we’ll read the work of accomplished writers and see how effective short fiction uses elements such as voice, characterization, point-of-view, and mood. We’ll share work in a supportive setting, with gentle, constructive feedback from instructor and peers. At the end of the session, we’ll discuss various paths to publication.
